Solid cross bars. Video showing installation is pretty accurate. Instructions show sliding the rubber strip (which it refers to as a wick) in the from the end. Started it this way, but unless you lubed the track up, this would be much more difficult than pushing it in the from top, as shown in the video. The parts fit very snugly, so I would suggest putting some spray lubricant in the tracks of the bars before assembling. The T handle wrench shown in the instructions is a simple L shaped wrench like you get with furniture that needs to be assembled. This makes tightening the bars on a bit tedious. If you don't want to leave the rack on all the time, I would suggest getting a T handle wrench. Although the bars indicate that they fit rails with outside dimensions 103 -119 cm. The rear end of the rails on my RAV-4 measure 103 cm, but I had to lengthen the channel for the rear bar (with a drill and file) by over 1/2" on each side if I wanted to easily put the rack on when it was all the way to the back of the rails. The plastic bag, which contains, the keys, wrench, etc. was missing the lower wicks for the bars. The installation video shows these with the plastic bag, but does not show them being installed. We'll see if these are needed for wind noise. If so, I will probably just use some electrical tape to cover the slots on the bottom side of the bars.
